German Cockroach

Cockroaches – elusive and unexpected

Anyone who has had cockroaches in their home will know that cockroaches are far more likely to be seen running ...

The elusive nature of cockroaches will be familiar to every Gold Coast home or business owner.

You would know that cockroaches rarely just hang around out in the open. They are far more likely to be seen scurrying away with all the predictability of a bouncing rugby ball. At other times, the roaches will be lurking in places that are out of sight and out of reach.

“If we consider what their role in nature is,” says Lee Maddocks from Richards Pest Control, “it’s easy to understand why cockroaches hide out in dark places and damp areas.

“Cockroaches can’t defend themselves against predators. They rely on concealment. In nature, they’d be hiding under leaf debris or under decaying tree stumps, and foraging under cover of darkness.”

“Inadvertently, in our homes we have created habitats that are attractive to cockroaches. There’s food, there’s moisture, and there are plenty of dark places to hide away.

“Cockroaches are also interested in eating things we don’t think of as food, just in case you were under the misapprehension that keeping your home spotless will keep them out…”

There are a few different cockroach species that are pests in Gold Coast homes and businesses. German cockroaches are arguably the most vexing species. They breed fast and can be difficult to control.
